Are Latex Balloons
Biodegradable?
Latex balloons will
decompose as quickly as an oak leaf in identical conditions.
Exposure to elevated temperatures, sunlight, and micro
organisms will help decompose latex balloons so a latex
balloon left outside in your compost will break down fairly
quickly. Stress caused by inflation helps begin the
decomposition cycle. Latex balloons should still be
handled with care since they can be a choking hazard to
children and animals alike.
Latex Balloon
Releases
We encourage everyone to
use balloons in a responsible manner. Since latex
balloons are 100% biodegradable they are sometimes used in
balloon releases to mark special events. However,
please keep certain things in mind when doing balloon
releases.
(1) Only use latex
balloons. Never use foil balloons which are sometimes
referred to as mylar balloons since there is a chance foil
balloons can conduct electricity and damage power lines.
(2) Only use hand tied
latex balloons since plastic attachments such as tie discs
are not biodegradable and pose a choking hazard.
(3) Use biodegradable
ribbon or better still do not use ribbon at all
Important
Environmental Facts about Latex Balloons.
Latex Balloons are
produced from the latex of the rubber trees. It is
collected without harming the tree using environmentally
safe methods. A rubber tree can produce latex for up
to 40 years. Since rubber trees consume Carbon Dioxide
and give off Oxygen these trees help play a role in the
ecological balance of the earth. |
